Tommy è uno dei primissimi esempi di cinematografia a tematica sociale: l'autismo, nei primi anni 70 non si sapeva quasi cosa fosse. E il fatto che sia stato un famoso gruppo come gli Who a scrivere la colonna sonora e ad interpretarlo, oltre ad essere uno splendido esempio of originality, has meant that the autistic disorder was finally placed under the spotlight and known to most people.
